The difference between knowing and becoming

Sep 26, 2026

Knowing what to do and being able to experience yourself doing it are different things.

My client Melanie described coaching this way:

“I feel like it’s like working with a personal trainer. You’re never going to push yourself as hard as you really can on your own.

If you can go heavier or do three or four more reps, that coach is going to see that you can do it because they’re not feeling the stress of you holding the weight. They’re going to see you can do it. They believe you can do it because they’re watching you grow. And then they’re going to push you to do it.

And you’re like, ‘Okay, here I am. I have you supporting me. If I drop it, you’re going to catch me.’

And you go for it.

And you realize how much stronger you are than you thought.”

Melanie had been in therapy. She had breathwork and meditation tools. She was highly self-aware.

She did not need more information.

She needed a different experience.

She needed to act while someone held the belief that she could do it, stay with the discomfort, and discover what happened on the other side.

That is the role accountability plays in nervous-system rewiring.

You can create the vision and change the belief intellectually. Then the real moment arrives.

You have to close the laptop.

Hold the boundary.

Let someone else lead.

Choose what you want.

Accountability helps you remain with the new choice long enough to experience yourself becoming someone different.
